Windows 7: How to Set the Date and Time

Keeping your system clock accurate is more important than it looks. In Windows 7, an incorrect date or time can cause "SSL Certificate" errors in your browser, prevent Windows Updates from running, and even mess up your file timestamps. Since Windows 7 is a legacy OS, ensuring it stays synchronized with internet time servers is a key part of maintaining system health.

Here are the easiest ways to adjust your settings:

Method 1: The System Tray (Easiest)

  1. Click on the Clock in the bottom-right corner of your taskbar.

  2. Click the link that says Change date and time settings...

  3. In the window that appears, click the Change date and time button (you may need to provide Administrator permission).

  4. Adjust the calendar and the clock to the correct values and click OK.

Method 2: Synchronizing with Internet Time

If your clock keeps drifting, you should force it to sync with an official time server:

  1. Open the Date and Time window (as described above).

  2. Go to the Internet Time tab and click Change settings.

  3. Ensure "Synchronize with an Internet time server" is checked.

  4. Select time.windows.com from the dropdown and click Update now.

  5. Click OK once the success message appears.
