Windows Ecosystem: Latest Updates (March 2026)

Even though Windows 7 is in legacy status, the modern Windows ecosystem saw significant activity during the March 10, 2026, Patch Tuesday:

  • Firefox ESR 115 Support Extension: In a major victory for Windows 7 users, Mozilla has officially extended security support for Firefox ESR 115 until August 2026, six months longer than previously planned.

  • AI-Discovered Vulnerability (CVE-2026-21536): For the first time, a critical Remote Code Execution vulnerability was identified by an autonomous AI agent (XBOW) and subsequently patched in the Windows ecosystem.

  • Secure Boot Certificate Push: Microsoft is rolling out urgent updates for Secure Boot certificates that expire in June 2026. Admins are urged to verify hardware compatibility to avoid boot failures this summer.

  • Critical SQL Server Fix (CVE-2026-21262): A high-severity elevation of privilege flaw was patched. It previously allowed attackers with low-level access to escalate to "sysadmin" status over a network.

  • Office "Preview Pane" Mitigations: Security updates were released to fix flaws (CVE-2026-26110 and CVE-2026-26113) that allowed malicious code execution simply by viewing a booby-trapped email in the Outlook preview pane.
