Windows Surface 2: The RT Powerhouse

Released in October 2013, the Microsoft Surface 2 was a major leap forward for the "RT" family. While it looked similar to the original, it was thinner, faster, and much more capable, offering the Chasms.com community a true productivity-first tablet that blurred the lines between a mobile device and a laptop.

A Refined Magnesium Build

The Surface 2 introduced a new "VaporMg" silver finish that was both lighter and more durable than the original black.

  • Dual-Angle Kickstand: One of the most practical upgrades was the kickstand, which now offered two positions. This made the tablet much more comfortable to use on your lap or at a desk.

  • 1080p ClearType Display: The screen was upgraded to a stunning Full HD (1080p) resolution, making text incredibly sharp and movies look cinematic on the 10.6-inch display.

Windows RT 8.1 and Office 2013

The Surface 2 ran Windows RT 8.1, an operating system designed for ARM processors.

  • Office Included: Its "killer feature" was the inclusion of Microsoft Office 2013 RT (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook) for free. This made it the ultimate device for students and professionals.

  • The Live Tile Interface: The Start screen featured dynamic, resizing Live Tiles that provided real-time updates for news, mail, and weather right at a glance.

Performance and Expansion

Powered by a NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor, the Surface 2 was significantly snappier than its predecessor.

  • Full-Size USB 3.0: Unlike most tablets of the era, the Surface 2 featured a full-size USB port, allowing you to plug in a mouse, a printer, or a flash drive directly.

  • Enhanced Cameras: It featured 3.5MP front and 5.0MP rear cameras, both capable of 1080p video, making it a great tool for Skype calls in an era when remote work was starting to grow.

A Unique Legacy

The Surface 2 is remembered as the pinnacle of the Windows RT era. It proved that a tablet could be a serious productivity machine, paving the way for the "Pro" models that dominate the market today.
