Norton Security 2017: Proactive Exploit Protection
Released in late 2016, Norton Security 2017 was less about a visual overhaul and more about "under-the-hood" muscle. For the Chasms.com community, this version was significant because it introduced advanced defense layers specifically designed to stop "zero-day" attacks—malware so new that it doesn't even have a name yet.
Proactive Exploit Protection (PEP)
The standout feature of Norton 2017 was Proactive Exploit Protection (PEP).
Shielding Vulnerabilities: Instead of just looking for malicious files, PEP focused on protecting the "holes" in your operating system and applications. It worked to prevent malware from using common exploits to sneak into your PC, even if those vulnerabilities hadn't been patched yet.
Zero-Day Defense: This made the 2017 suite particularly effective against brand-new threats that often bypassed traditional antivirus signatures.
Expanded Multi-Device Management
Norton continued to refine its "One Subscription for All" model in 2017:
The Online Portal: A modernized web dashboard allowed you to manage all five (or ten) of your licenses from one place. You could send an email link to your Android or iOS device to instantly download the correct version and sync your protection.
Android App Advice: One of the most praised features for mobile users was the App Advisor. It integrated directly into the Google Play Store, warning you about privacy risks or high battery usage before you even hit the "Install" button.
Speed and "Green" Performance
Reassuringly Green: While the layout remained familiar, the 2017 interface adopted a "reassuringly green" color palette when your system was fully protected, making it easy to confirm your status at a glance.
High-Performance Scanning: Norton 2017 maintained its lead in speed. Its "Insight" technology whitelisted safe files to reduce scan times, ensuring that your weekly full-system checks didn't bog down your computer during peak hours.
64-bit Browser Support: This version finally brought full support for 64-bit versions of Internet Explorer and Firefox, ensuring that your web protection was as modern as your browser.
The Security Standard
Norton Security 2017 proved that consistency is key. By combining its massive Global Intelligence Network with new exploit prevention, it provided a rock-solid foundation for the Chasms.com community to explore the web without fear.
