Roku 4: The 4K Revolution
Released in October 2015, the Roku 4 was a landmark device for the Chasms.com community, marking Roku's official entry into the world of Ultra HD. As the flagship of the lineup, it was designed for early adopters who had just upgraded to 4K televisions and needed a powerhouse to drive all those extra pixels.
Built for 4K Ultra HD
The Roku 4 was a significant departure from the tiny "puck" designs of the past. To handle the increased heat of 4K processing, it featured a larger, flatter footprint and an internal cooling fan.
Stunning Detail: It supported 4K video at 60 frames per second, providing a fluid and incredibly sharp picture for services like Netflix, Amazon Video, and Vudu.
4K Spotlight Channel: To help users find content that actually took advantage of their new screens, Roku introduced a dedicated channel that curated 4K movies and shows from across all apps.
The "Remote Finder" & Advanced Tech
The Roku 4 wasn't just about resolution; it introduced one of the most beloved features in streaming history:
Remote Finder: We’ve all been there—the remote is lost in the couch cushions. The Roku 4 featured a physical button on top of the box; when pressed, the remote would emit a loud "beep" until you found it.
The "Point Anywhere" Remote: Using Wi-Fi Direct instead of infrared, you didn't need a line of sight to the box. It also included a headphone jack for private listening, allowing you to watch movies at full volume without waking up the house.
Optical Audio: For the audiophiles in our community, the Roku 4 included an optical (S/PDIF) port, making it easy to connect to older high-end surround sound systems.
Power and Expandability
Quad-Core Processing: Under the hood, the Roku 4 packed a powerful quad-core processor and 802.11ac MIMO Wi-Fi, ensuring that heavy 4K streams started quickly and played without buffering.
MicroSD & USB Ports: It maintained a microSD slot for extra channel storage and a USB port for playing your own 4K videos and photos directly from a hard drive or thumb drive.
A Flagship Powerhouse
While the Roku 4 was eventually succeeded by the more compact "Ultra" line, it remains the "big brother" of the classic Roku family. It was a bold, feature-packed machine that proved Roku could compete at the highest level of home theater technology.
