Apple TV 5.2.1: Hulu Redesigned and Security Refined

Released in March 2013, the Apple TV 5.2.1 software update was a essential "tune-up" for the 2nd and 3rd generation Apple TV models. While it might have looked like a minor point-release, it brought a much-needed facelift to one of the device's most popular streaming apps and closed the door on several major system vulnerabilities.

A New Look for Hulu Plus

The headline feature of version 5.2.1 was a complete ground-up redesign of the Hulu Plus experience.

  • Modern Navigation: Hulu traded its old list-based menus for a sleek horizontal bar and banner-based layout that matched the native Apple "iTunes Store" aesthetic.

  • "Shows You Watch": A new "tray" was added to the home screen, making it easier for users to jump straight back into their favorite series without digging through menus.

  • One-Click Play: You could now highlight a series and simply hit the "Play" button on your remote to instantly start the latest episode—no extra clicks required.

Security & The "evad3rs"

Behind the scenes, 5.2.1 was a major security update. It officially patched several exploits discovered by the famous evad3rs jailbreak team:

  • Kernel Fixes: The update addressed flaws that could allow a local user to determine the address of structures in the kernel or execute arbitrary code.

  • Stability: By refining the way the system handled Mach-O executable files, Apple made the OS more resilient against crashes and unauthorized system changes.

Refined Music & Playback

Building on the "Up Next" feature introduced in version 5.2, this update polished the music experience:

  • Subtitles & Audio: Accessing captions became easier—holding down the "Select" button during playback now reliably brought up the Subtitles and Audio menu.

  • Japanese & Israeli iTunes: This version also expanded the reach of "iTunes in the Cloud" for music, bringing the service to users in Japan and Israel for the first time.

A Stable Foundation

Apple TV 5.2.1 was one of the last major updates before the transition to the 6.x software cycle. It provided a stable, secure environment for users who were perfectly happy with their existing hardware but wanted a more "modern" feel for their streaming apps.
