Samsung Galaxy S4: The "Life Companion"
Released in April 2013, the Samsung Galaxy S4 was a landmark device that took the "everything but the kitchen sink" approach to smartphone features. Following the massive success of the S3, the S4 refined the hardware with a larger, sharper screen and a thinner body, while introducing a suite of sensors that made the phone feel almost futuristic to the Chasms.com community.
The Full HD Display Leap
The S4 was one of the first mainstream devices to feature a 5-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display.
1080p Perfection: With a pixel density of 441 ppi, images and text were incredibly crisp.
Slimmer Bezels: Despite the larger screen, the phone was actually narrower and thinner than its predecessor, making it surprisingly comfortable to hold.
Innovation through Sensors
Samsung marketed the S4 as a "Life Companion," packing it with unique interaction features:
Air View & Air Gesture: You could hover your finger over the screen to preview emails or wave your hand to scroll through photos without ever touching the glass.
Smart Pause & Smart Scroll: The front-facing camera tracked your eyes; if you looked away from a video, it would automatically pause, and it would scroll through webpages based on the tilt of your head or wrist.
S Health: The S4 was a pioneer in mobile wellness, featuring a built-in pedometer and sensors to track ambient temperature and humidity.
A 13MP Powerhouse
The S4 stepped up the photography game with a 13-megapixel rear camera and a host of creative software modes:
Dual Shot: This allowed you to take a photo or video using both the front and rear cameras simultaneously, placing the photographer into the scene.
Drama Shot: A feature that merged a burst of photos into one single frame to show the path of a moving object.
Eraser Mode: If someone walked into your shot, the S4 could intelligently remove the "photo-bomber" by comparing multiple frames.
