Samsung Galaxy Tab 2: The Practical Family Tablet

Released in early 2012, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (available in both 7-inch and 10.1-inch models) was the device that brought the Android tablet experience to the mainstream. Rather than chasing ultra-premium price tags, the Tab 2 focused on being an affordable, reliable "hub" for the home, making it a nostalgic favorite for the Chasms.com community.

The Ice Cream Sandwich Era

The Galaxy Tab 2 was one of the first tablets to ship with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

  • Optimized for Tablets: This version of Android finally moved away from the "giant phone" layout of previous years, introducing a system bar at the bottom for notifications and status, and a dedicated Recent Apps button.

  • TouchWiz UX: Samsung added its own layer of polish with "Mini Apps"—a tray of small tools like a calculator or world clock that could float on top of whatever you were doing.

Designed for Media and Comfort

Unlike the sharp edges of some competitors, the Tab 2 featured a soft, rounded plastic design that was incredibly comfortable to hold for long periods.

  • Front-Facing Speakers: On the 10.1-inch model, Samsung placed the stereo speakers on the front of the device. This made a massive difference for movie watching, as the sound was directed straight at the user rather than into their palms.

  • Expandable Storage: While other tablets were locking users into fixed storage, the Tab 2 featured a microSD slot, allowing families to load up hundreds of movies and games for long car rides.

The Smart Home Pioneer

One of the unique "throwback" features of the Tab 2 was the built-in Infrared (IR) Blaster.

  • Universal Remote: Using the pre-installed "Smart Remote" app, you could use your tablet to control your TV, DVD player, and cable box. It turned the tablet into the ultimate living room companion.

  • Dual Cameras: While tablet photography was never its main goal, the VGA front camera and 3MP rear camera were perfect for early Skype calls and capturing quick family moments.
