Mac Mail 11: Smarter Inbox Management
Released on September 25, 2017, as a core part of macOS High Sierra, Mac Mail 11 was designed to help users conquer their cluttered inboxes. It moved beyond being a simple email client by introducing intelligent search and organizational tools that made managing a high volume of mail feel effortless.
Top Hits in Search
The standout feature of Mail 11 was Top Hits. Using Apple’s on-device machine learning, the app began prioritizing your most relevant emails.
Smart Results: When you searched for a keyword, Mail would place the most relevant messages—based on who you communicate with most and your recent activity—at the very top of the list.
Learning Over Time: The more you used the search feature, the more accurate it became at predicting which documents or threads you were looking for.
Split View for Full-Screen Composing
For those who prefer working in full-screen, Mail 11 introduced a much-needed Split View for composing messages.
Side-by-Side: When you opened a new message window in full-screen mode, the message would slide in from the side, allowing you to reference your inbox or a specific email while you drafted your reply.
Multiple Drafts: You could even have multiple draft tabs open at the bottom of the Compose window, making it easy to jump between different conversations.
Better Storage and Efficiency
Under the hood, Mail 11 benefited from the new Apple File System (APFS) and general optimization:
Storage Savings: This version was more efficient at managing attachments and local data, potentially saving up to 35% more disk space compared to previous versions.
Faster Performance: Scrolling through massive mailboxes and switching between accounts became significantly smoother.
