Mac Mail 13: Taking Control of the Noise

Released on October 7, 2019, as a core part of macOS Catalina, Mac Mail 13 was designed to give users more power over their digital communication. This version focused on "reducing the noise," introducing features that allowed users to silence annoying threads and block unwanted senders with just a few clicks.

Mute Thread: Silence the Reply-All

We’ve all been trapped in a "reply-all" email chain that won't stop pinging. Mail 13 introduced a much-needed Mute Thread option.

  • Quiet Peace: Right-clicking a conversation and selecting "Mute" stops all future notifications for that specific thread.

  • Hidden but Not Lost: The emails still arrive in your inbox, but they no longer trigger alerts or badges, allowing you to catch up only when you're ready.

Block Sender: A True Shield

Mail 13 brought a more aggressive way to handle unwanted communication with Block Sender.

  • Direct Actions: When you block a contact, you can choose to have their messages marked as "blocked" but remain in your inbox, or have them moved automatically to the Trash.

  • Cross-Device Sync: Because these settings are tied to your iCloud account, blocking a sender on your Mac also silences them on your iPhone and iPad.

Unsubscribe with Ease

Taking a cue from iOS, Mail 13 added an Unsubscribe link directly at the top of the message header for mailing lists. If Mail detects that an email is part of a subscription, it displays a banner allowing you to opt-out without having to hunt for the tiny link at the bottom of the email.

The Move to 64-Bit and Layout Changes

For the tech-focused readers on Chasms.com, Mail 13 marked some significant structural shifts:

  • 64-Bit Only: Like the rest of Catalina, Mail 13 is strictly 64-bit, ensuring it runs with maximum stability and security on modern hardware.

  • Classic View Refinement: This version saw changes to the "Classic" column layout. While some legacy sorting options were streamlined, it introduced a more modern, two-line preview that made scanning subject lines faster on high-resolution screens.
