Mac OS X Tiger 10.4: The Modern Mac is Born
Released on April 29, 2005, Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger was a landmark release that stayed on the market longer than any other version of OS X. It was the bridge between the old PowerPC era and the new Intel-based Macs, bringing with it features that would define the Apple experience for the next two decades.
Spotlight: Find Anything Instantly
The headline feature of Tiger was Spotlight. Before this, searching for a file was a slow, manual process. Spotlight introduced lightning-fast, system-wide metadata searching. Whether you were looking for a word inside a PDF or a specific metadata tag in a photo, Spotlight found it the moment you finished typing.
Dashboard and Widgets
Tiger introduced the Dashboard, a semi-transparent layer that swirled onto the screen to reveal "Widgets." These mini-applications allowed users to quickly check the weather, track stocks, or use a calculator without launching a full app—a precursor to the mobile widgets we use today.
The Evolution of the Desktop
Safari RSS: Tiger’s version of Safari included a built-in RSS reader, making it easier than ever to follow news sites and blogs directly from the browser.
Automator: For the first time, users could create complex workflows and automate repetitive tasks without knowing how to write a single line of code.
Core Image & Core Video: These new technologies allowed the Mac to offload visual processing to the graphics card, enabling the famous "ripple" effect when adding a widget to the Dashboard.
The Intel Transition
Perhaps the most important technical feat of Tiger was its hidden versatility. While it launched on PowerPC, it was the version of OS X that Apple used to transition to Intel processors in 2006. This move saved the Mac platform and set the stage for the massive performance leaps that followed.
