macOS Sierra 10.12: The Mac Gets Smarter

Released on September 20, 2016, macOS Sierra (version 10.12) marked a major rebranding for Apple’s desktop OS, officially changing the name from "OS X" to macOS to align with iOS, watchOS, and tvOS. Beyond the name change, Sierra focused on making the Mac a more integrated part of the Apple ecosystem.

Siri Comes to the Mac

For the first time, Apple’s intelligent assistant, Siri, made its debut on the desktop.

  • Multitasking with Voice: Users could ask Siri to find files, check the weather, or send messages while continuing to work in other apps.

  • Pinned Results: You could even "pin" Siri search results—like sports scores or file lists—directly into the Notification Center for real-time tracking.

Continuity: Universal Clipboard & Auto Unlock

Sierra introduced several "Continuity" features that made switching between devices feel like magic:

  • Universal Clipboard: You could copy text, images, or video on your iPhone and instantly paste them onto your Mac (and vice versa).

  • Auto Unlock: If you were wearing an authenticated Apple Watch, your Mac would automatically unlock as you approached it—no password required.

  • Apple Pay on the Web: Safari gained support for Apple Pay, allowing users to authorize secure online purchases using the Touch ID on their iPhone or Apple Watch.

Smarter Storage and Organization

  • Optimized Storage: To help users with smaller SSDs, Sierra could automatically move infrequently used files to iCloud, keeping only the most recent ones on your local drive.

  • Desktop & Documents in iCloud: You could choose to sync your entire Desktop and Documents folders to iCloud, making them accessible from any other Mac or iOS device.

  • Tabs Everywhere: Apple extended "Safari-style" tabs to almost every app that supported multiple windows, including Maps, Mail, and even third-party apps.

  • Picture-in-Picture: Like on the iPad, you could float a video window from Safari or iTunes over your desktop so you could watch while you worked.

Photos and Memories

The Photos app received a massive intelligence boost:

  • Memories: The app began automatically creating slideshows and collections based on your best photos from specific trips or events.

  • Advanced Recognition: Sierra used local on-device processing to recognize faces, objects, and even scenes (like "beaches" or "dogs") to make searching your library effortless.
