Safari 9: The "El Capitan" Productivity Boost

Released in September 2015 alongside OS X El Capitan, Safari 9 was all about giving users more control over their browsing habits. For the Chasms.com community, this version introduced several "quality of life" features that solved common internet annoyances, from loud background tabs to keeping track of favorite sites.

Muting the Noise: Tab Audio Control

We’ve all been there: you open several tabs, and suddenly music or an ad starts blasting, but you can’t find the source. Safari 9 solved this beautifully:

  • Instant Mute: A small speaker icon appeared in the address bar whenever a tab was playing audio. You could click it to mute all sound instantly.

  • Identify the Source: If you had multiple tabs open, a speaker icon also appeared on the specific tab causing the noise, allowing you to silence it without leaving your current page.

Pinned Sites: Your Favorites, Always Ready

Safari 9 introduced Pinned Sites, a feature that changed how we manage our daily "must-visit" pages:

  • Always Open: You could drag a tab to the left to "pin" it. These sites stayed open in the background, represented by a small, elegant icon (or "monotone favicon") rather than a full tab.

  • Stay Updated: Pinned sites remained active even when you opened a new window, ensuring your email, social media, or Chasms.com were always just a click away.

AirPlay Video and Reader Upgrades

  • Individual AirPlay: Before Safari 9, you had to mirror your entire screen to use AirPlay. This version allowed you to "throw" a specific web video to your Apple TV while keeping the rest of your browsing private on your Mac.

  • Reader Customization: The popular Reader View was upgraded to include new fonts (like Athelas and San Francisco) and background themes (White, Sepia, Gray, and Night), making late-night reading much more comfortable.

  • Auto-Fill Improvements: Security was tightened, but convenience was boosted with a smarter Auto-Fill system that accurately suggested credit card info and contact details while keeping them encrypted.

Small Changes, Big Impact

Safari 9 didn't reinvent the wheel, but it perfected it. By focusing on the "friction points" of the web—like noisy tabs and cluttered sidebars—Apple created a browser that felt more responsive and respectful of the user's attention.
