Safari 10: The macOS Sierra Modernization

Released in September 2016 alongside macOS Sierra, Safari 10 was a transformative update that focused on security, multitasking, and the retirement of aging web technologies. For the Chasms.com community, this version felt like the true beginning of the "modern" Mac web, prioritizing native HTML5 performance over legacy plug-ins.

Picture-in-Picture: Multitasking Mastered

The standout feature of Safari 10 was Picture-in-Picture (PiP).

  • Floating Video: Users could finally "pop" a video out of a webpage and into a floating window that sat on top of all other applications.

  • Work and Watch: You could resize the video and snap it to any corner of your screen, allowing you to watch a tutorial or a tech review while simultaneously following along on Chasms.com.

The HTML5 Revolution

Safari 10 took a bold stance against old, battery-draining technology:

  • HTML5 by Default: This version prioritized HTML5 content whenever available. Legacy plug-ins like Adobe Flash and Silverlight were deactivated by default.

  • Click to Play: If a site absolutely required a plug-in, Safari would ask for your permission first, ensuring that your Mac stayed fast and your battery stayed charged.

Apple Pay on the Web

Safari 10 brought the convenience of the iPhone to the Mac desktop:

  • Secure Shopping: You could finally use Apple Pay to make purchases on participating websites.

  • Touch ID Continuity: When you went to check out, a prompt would appear on your iPhone or Apple Watch, allowing you to authorize the payment with a fingerprint or a double-click of the side button.

Refined Extensions and Bookmarks

  • App Store Extensions: Following the "Apple Ecosystem" philosophy, Safari Extensions began moving into the Mac App Store, making them easier to find, update, and manage alongside your other apps.

  • Redesigned Bookmarks: The Bookmarks and History views were unified into a cleaner, searchable sidebar that made it much easier to find that one specific page you visited last week.
