Windows 8: How to Create a Dial-Up Connection
While high-speed fiber and 5G dominate the landscape in 2026, dial-up remains a critical fallback for remote locations and legacy industrial systems. In Windows 8, the process for setting up a dial-up connection is tucked away in the Control Panel, as the modern "Settings" app focuses primarily on Wi-Fi and Ethernet.
Here is how to manually configure a dial-up connection on your Windows 8 or 8.1 machine:
Step 1: Open the Network and Sharing Center
Press the Windows Key + X on your keyboard to open the Power User menu.
Select Control Panel from the list.
Click on Network and Internet and then select Network and Sharing Center.
Step 2: Start the Connection Wizard
Inside the Network and Sharing Center, click the link that says Set up a new connection or network.
A wizard window will appear. Select Connect to the Internet and click Next.
If you already have a connection active, Windows might ask if you want to use an existing one; select No, create a new connection.
Choose Dial-up from the list of connection types.
Step 3: Enter Your ISP Credentials
You will now need the specific details provided by your dial-up service provider:
Dial-up phone number: Enter the local access number (including any prefixes like '9' if needed).
User name: Your account login (usually your full email address).
Password: Your account password (check "Remember this password" for easier access).
Connection name: Give it a clear name, like "Backup Dial-up" or "Chasms ISP."
Click Create (or Connect if your modem is already plugged in). Once finished, you can access this connection anytime by clicking the Network icon in your system tray.
