Windows 8: Finding the Classic Control Panel

Windows 8 introduced a major shift in design, replacing the familiar Start Menu with the tile-based Start Screen. For many users, this made finding the "Classic" Control Panel—where the most powerful system tools live—feel like a hidden secret. While Microsoft pushed the new "PC Settings" app, the traditional Control Panel is still the heart of advanced troubleshooting.

Here are the four fastest ways to find it on a Windows 8 or 8.1 system:

Method 1: The "Power User" Menu (Fastest)

This is the most direct way to access nearly any system tool.

  1. On your keyboard, press Windows Key + X.

  2. A small menu will pop up in the bottom-left corner.

  3. Select Control Panel from the list.

Method 2: The "Charms Bar" Search

If you are already using your mouse or a touch screen:

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen (or move your mouse to the top-right corner) to reveal the Charms Bar.

  2. Click the Search icon (the magnifying glass).

  3. Type Control Panel into the box.

  4. Click the Control Panel icon that appears in the results.

Method 3: The Run Command

If you prefer the classic command-entry method:

  1. Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog.

  2. Type control and press Enter.

Method 4: The Desktop Right-Click

If you want to keep the Control Panel visible at all times:

  1. Right-click an empty space on your Desktop and select Personalize.

  2. Click Change desktop icons on the left-hand side.

  3. Check the box next to Control Panel and click OK. You will now have a permanent shortcut on your desktop.
