Internet Explorer 9: How to Enable or Disable Java and JavaScript

In the legacy world of Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 9 (IE9), JavaScript and Java are the heavy lifters. JavaScript handles the interactive elements on your favorite sites, while Java—though rarer today—powers specialized enterprise applets and simulators.

If your pages aren't loading correctly or you need to lock down your browser for security testing, knowing how to toggle these scripts is essential.

How to Toggle JavaScript (Active Scripting)

Internet Explorer refers to JavaScript as "Active Scripting."

  1. Open IE9 and click the Gear icon (Tools) in the top-right corner.

  2. Select Internet Options.

  3. Click the Security tab and ensure the Internet zone (the globe icon) is selected.

  4. Click the Custom level... button.

  5. Scroll down until you find the Scripting section.

  6. Look for Active Scripting:

    • To Enable: Select Enable.

    • To Disable: Select Disable.

  7. Click OK, then click Yes on the warning prompt. Restart IE9 to apply the changes.

How to Toggle Java Applets

Java is handled as a separate plug-in within the same menu.

  1. Follow steps 1–4 above to open the Custom level... settings.

  2. Scroll to the Scripting section.

  3. Look for Scripting of Java applets:

    • To Enable: Select Enable.

    • To Disable: Select Disable.

  4. Click OK and restart the browser.

    • Chasms Tip: If Java still won't run, check your Windows Control Panel > Java to ensure the "Enable Java content in the browser" box is checked there as well.
