iPhone & iOS 5.0: How to Tether via USB

In the world of legacy tech support, tethering an iPhone running iOS 5.0 via USB remains a classic "save" when Wi-Fi isn't an option. While modern iPhones make this a one-tap process, iOS 5 (released in the era of the iPhone 4S) requires a specific sequence to ensure your Windows or Mac computer recognizes the phone as a modem rather than just a camera.

Step 1: Prepare Your Device

  1. Check Your Plan: Ensure your mobile carrier supports "Personal Hotspot" or "Tethering." On iOS 5, this was often a separate paid add-on.

  2. Install iTunes: For Windows users, you must have iTunes installed. It contains the "Apple Mobile Device Ethernet" driver required for your PC to "see" the internet connection.

Step 2: Enable the Hotspot

  1. On your iPhone, tap Settings.

  2. Look for Personal Hotspot (if it’s not on the main screen, look under General > Network).

  3. Toggle the Personal Hotspot switch to ON.

  4. When prompted, select "USB Only" (this prevents your phone from broadcasting a Wi-Fi signal unnecessarily, saving battery).

Step 3: Connect to Your Computer

  1. Plug your iPhone into your computer using the 30-pin dock connector cable.

  2. On Windows: A new network icon should appear in your system tray. If it doesn't, open Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings and ensure "Apple Mobile Device Ethernet" is enabled.

  3. On Mac: A blue bar will appear at the top of your iPhone screen, indicating that a device is successfully tethered.
