How to Reset Internet Explorer 9 Settings

Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) was a staple of the Windows 7 era, and many legacy business tools and simulators still rely on its specific engine to run correctly. However, over time, a buildup of cache, conflicting add-ons, or modified security zones can cause the browser to crash or fail to load pages.

When "Compatibility View" isn't enough, a full reset is the best way to restore IE9 to its original factory state.

Step-by-Step: The Manual Reset

  1. Close all Windows: Make sure all Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer windows are closed before you begin.

  2. Open Internet Options: * Click the Start button and type Internet Options in the search box, then press Enter.

    • Alternatively: Open IE9, click the Tools icon (the gear in the top-right), and select Internet Options.

  3. Navigate to Advanced: Click on the Advanced tab at the far right of the window.

  4. Initiate Reset: Under the section titled "Reset Internet Explorer settings," click the Reset... button.

  5. Confirm (Optional Personal Data): A dialog box will appear. If you want to remove your history, search providers, and homepages as well, check the box for "Delete personal settings."

  6. Apply: Click Reset. Once Windows finishes applying the default settings, click Close, then OK.

  7. Restart: You must restart your computer for the changes to take full effect and for the registry keys to rebuild.
