Mac: How to Install and Uninstall Drivers (2026 Guide)

In the modern era of macOS 26 Tahoe, the way we handle drivers has fundamentally changed. Most of the hardware you plug into a Mac today uses "driverless" technology (like AirPrint or USB Class drivers), meaning macOS already knows how to talk to it. However, specialized gear like high-end audio interfaces, complex printers, or gaming peripherals still require specific software to unlock their full potential.

Here is how to manage those drivers on your Mac in 2026.

How to Install Drivers on Mac

  1. Check for Automatic Support: Plug your device in first. Often, macOS will automatically download the necessary "System Extension" in the background.

  2. Download from the Source: If the device isn't working, visit the manufacturer’s official support page. Download the installer package (usually a .pkg or .dmg file).

  3. Run the Installer: Double-click the file and follow the prompts.

  4. Allow the Extension: Because of Apple’s strict security, you must often "approve" the driver. Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security. Scroll down to see a message stating "System software from developer [Name] was blocked." Click Allow.

  5. Restart: Even in 2026, a quick reboot is often required to fully "handshake" the new driver with the macOS kernel.

How to Uninstall Drivers on Mac

Unlike apps, drivers often hide in system folders. To remove them completely:

  • The Uninstaller Utility: Check your Applications folder for a folder named after the hardware (e.g., "HP" or "Logitech"). Many include a dedicated "Uninstaller" app. This is the cleanest method.

  • Manual Removal: If there is no uninstaller, go to Finder, select Go > Go to Folder, and check these locations for files named after your device:

    • /Library/Extensions (for older .kext drivers)

    • /Library/Application Support

  • System Settings: In macOS Tahoe, you can manage modern drivers under System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions. Look for "Endpoint Security" or "System Extensions" and toggle them off or remove them.
