Firefox 12 & Windows 7: How to Enable or Disable JavaScript

In the legacy environment of Windows 7 and Firefox 12, JavaScript is the engine that makes web simulators and interactive tools function correctly. However, you may occasionally need to disable it for security testing or to stop aggressive scripts from freezing an older system.

Unlike modern versions of Firefox where this setting is buried deep in the hidden configuration, Firefox 12 still features a user-friendly checkbox in the standard options menu.

Method 1: The Standard Menu (Easiest)

  1. Open Firefox and click the orange Firefox button in the top-left corner (or click Tools in the menu bar).

  2. Select Options and then click Options again in the sub-menu.

  3. In the Options window, click the Content tab (represented by a globe or list icon).

  4. Locate the checkbox labeled Enable JavaScript.

    • To Enable: Ensure the box is checked.

    • To Disable: Uncheck the box.

  5. Click OK to save your changes.

  6. Refresh the page: You must reload your current website for the change to take effect.

Method 2: The Advanced Config (For Pro Users)

If the checkbox is missing or being overridden by a policy, you can use the internal editor:

  1. In the address bar, type about:config and press Enter.

  2. Click "I'll be careful, I promise!" if a warning appears.

  3. In the "Search" box at the top, type javascript.enabled.

  4. Double-click the preference to toggle it between true (Enabled) and false (Disabled).
