iPhone on iOS 10: "The Mother of All Releases"

Released on September 13, 2016, iOS 10 was famously described by Apple as the biggest update in the history of the platform. It fundamentally changed how users interacted with their iPhones, introducing a more expressive, open, and intelligent experience that moved beyond simple app icons.

A New Way to Wake

iOS 10 retired the iconic "Slide to Unlock" gesture that had been around since the very first iPhone.

  • Raise to Wake: Simply lifting your iPhone turned on the screen, allowing you to see your notifications instantly.

  • Press to Unlock: Users now pressed the Home button to enter the device, a change designed to work seamlessly with the faster Touch ID sensors.

  • Rich Notifications: You could now interact with apps—like replying to a message or viewing a live map—directly from the Lock Screen using 3D Touch.

Messages: The App Within an App

The Messages app received its largest overhaul ever, turning it into a social platform.

  • The App Store for iMessage: Users could download stickers, play games like GamePigeon, and even send payments without leaving the chat.

  • Expressive Effects: Features like "Invisible Ink" (which required a swipe to reveal a hidden photo) and full-screen animations like lasers and fireworks added a new layer of personality to texting.

  • Digital Touch: Borrowed from the Apple Watch, you could send sketches, fireballs, and heartbeats to your contacts.

Intelligence and Openness

  • Siri for Everyone: For the first time, Apple opened Siri to third-party developers. This meant you could ask Siri to "Send a WhatsApp to Mom" or "Book a ride with Uber."

  • The Photos App: iOS 10 introduced Memories, which used on-device AI to automatically create movies and albums from your trips and events, recognizing faces and objects without compromising privacy.

  • The Home App: This version saw the debut of the dedicated Home app, providing a single place to manage all HomeKit-enabled smart devices like lights and thermostats.

Maps and Music Redesigns

Both Apple Maps and Apple Music were completely rebuilt with a focus on simplicity and bold typography. Maps became more proactive, suggesting destinations based on your routine, while Music focused on making your library easier to navigate with a much cleaner, high-contrast look.
