iPhone 4: The Design That Changed Everything

Released on June 24, 2010, the iPhone 4 was described by Steve Jobs as "the thinnest smartphone in the world" and compared to a "beautiful old Leica camera." It remains one of the most iconic pieces of industrial design in history, marking the moment the iPhone moved from a plastic-backed device to a premium glass-and-stainless-steel masterpiece.

The Retina Display Revolution

The iPhone 4 introduced the Retina Display. By quadrupling the pixel density of the previous iPhone 3GS, Apple reached a point where the human eye could no longer distinguish individual pixels at a normal viewing distance.

  • Crystal Clear: This made text look like printed paper and images look incredibly sharp—a standard that redefined expectations for every screen on the market.

FaceTime and the Front-Facing Camera

For the first time, the iPhone featured a front-facing camera, giving birth to FaceTime.

  • The "Selfie" Era: While we take it for granted now, the iPhone 4 made video calling a mainstream reality, allowing users to connect face-to-face over Wi-Fi for the first time.

Key Technical Milestones

  • The A4 Chip: This was the first iPhone to feature Apple’s own custom-designed silicon, providing the power needed for multitasking and high-definition video recording.

  • 5MP Camera with LED Flash: The rear camera was a massive upgrade, capable of recording 720p HD video and taking stunning photos that rivaled point-and-shoot cameras of the era.

  • Multitasking: Alongside the iPhone 4, iOS 4 launched, finally allowing users to switch between apps without closing them completely.

A Lasting Legacy

Despite the famous "Antennagate" controversy involving the external antenna band, the iPhone 4 was a monumental success. Its flat-edge design language was so beloved that Apple eventually returned to it years later with the iPhone 12 and 13 series.
