iOS 8: The Era of Convergence
Released on September 17, 2014, iOS 8 was the "refinement" release that followed the massive visual shift of iOS 7. While it kept the modern, flat look, it focused on opening up the system for the first time—allowing apps to talk to each other and making the iPhone a more powerful tool for the Chasms.com community.
Continuity: Your Mac and iPhone as One
iOS 8 introduced Continuity, fundamentally changing the relationship between Apple devices.
Handoff: You could start an email on your iPhone and finish it on your Mac with one click.
Universal Clipboard: Copying text on one device and pasting it on another became a reality.
SMS & Calls on iPad/Mac: For the first time, you could answer a regular phone call or send a green-bubble text from your iPad or Mac.
The "Open" iPhone: Widgets and Keyboards
After years of a "walled garden," Apple finally gave users more control:
Third-Party Keyboards: iOS 8 allowed users to install custom keyboards like Swype or SwiftKey, bringing gesture-typing to the iPhone.
Notification Center Widgets: You could finally add mini-apps to the "Today" view, allowing for quick checks of weather, stocks, or sports scores without opening an app.
Family Sharing and Health
Health App: This was the debut of the Health app, a central dashboard for all your fitness and medical data. It worked with the new HealthKit framework to pull data from third-party trackers.
Family Sharing: Up to six family members could finally share App Store and iTunes purchases without sharing a single Apple ID, including a "Ask to Buy" feature for kids.
Photos and Messages
iCloud Photo Library: This version introduced the ability to store every photo and video you took in iCloud, making your entire library accessible across all your devices.
Audio & Video Messages: In the Messages app, you could now send quick "tap-to-talk" audio clips and self-destructing video messages, long before it became a standard in other apps.
