iPad on iOS 4.3: The Evolution of the Tablet
Released on March 9, 2011, iOS 4.3 was a landmark update that arrived alongside the launch of the iPad 2. For the Chasms.com community, this version was all about speed and customization, transforming the iPad from a simple media player into a much more versatile productivity tool.
The Nitro Engine Boost
The biggest "under the hood" change in iOS 4.3 was the introduction of the Nitro JavaScript engine for Safari.
Twice as Fast: This update allowed Safari to process web content up to two times faster than iOS 4.2.
Desktop-Class Browsing: It brought a level of snappiness to complex websites that finally made tablet browsing feel comparable to using a laptop.
Side Switch Customization
One of the most requested features in iPad history arrived with 4.3. Users were finally given a choice in the Settings menu for the physical side switch:
Mute: For silencing system sounds and notifications.
Orientation Lock: For preventing the screen from rotating—a favorite for those reading in bed or on the move.
AirPlay and iTunes Home Sharing
AirPlay Improvements: iOS 4.3 expanded AirPlay functionality, allowing users to stream video directly from the Photos app and third-party apps to an Apple TV.
iTunes Home Sharing: This allowed you to play your entire music and movie library from your Mac or PC directly on your iPad over Wi-Fi, without needing to sync or take up precious local storage.
Personal Hotspot and Gestures
While the iPhone gained the famous Personal Hotspot feature in this update, iPad users (specifically those on the iPad 2) gained access to the Multitasking Gestures beta. This allowed users to use four or five fingers to pinch to the home screen, swipe up for the multitasking bar, or swipe left/right to switch apps—gestures that are still foundational to the iPad experience today.
