Apple significantly changed its naming convention in 2025, moving away from "iOS 19" and adopting iOS 26 to align with the release year. The current stable version as of late February 2026 is iOS 26.3.
Here are five key updates and their release dates:
Introduction of "Liquid Glass" Design (September 15, 2025): The initial launch of iOS 26 introduced the "Liquid Glass" redesign—the biggest visual overhaul since iOS 7. It features translucent, floating menus, rounded interface elements, and a "functional layer" that sits above apps for smoother navigation.
AirTag 2 Support & Security Patches (January 26, 2026): The iOS 26.2.1 update added native support for the 2nd-generation AirTag. It included improved precision tracking for moving objects and more detailed battery reporting for the new hardware.
Easy Android-to-iPhone Switching (February 11, 2026): With the release of iOS 26.3, Apple introduced a new data transfer tool that allows users to move content from an Android device to a new iPhone without needing a separate app, significantly streamlining the onboarding process.
Smart News & Podcast Navigation (December 12, 2025): iOS 26.2 added "Topic Sections" (Sports, Politics, Business) to the top of the Apple News Today feed and introduced automatically generated chapters in the Podcasts app to make skipping through long episodes easier.
RCS End-to-End Encryption Beta (February 23, 2026): The iOS 26.4 Beta 2 was seeded to developers, testing full end-to-end encryption for RCS messaging between iPhones and Android devices. This update also includes a new "Reduce Highlighting" accessibility feature to tone down the Liquid Glass effects.
