The screenshots shows both the shortcut menus open (normally closed).

To connect with Cable/DSL, normally you will select 'Ethernet' and 'Using DHCP Server' (see top screenshot).

A dial-up modem, usually you will select 'PPP' and Using PPP Server' (see bottom screenshot).
