I just had a Member that got this error when sending mail through Internet Explorer. The details button said "501, invalid domain name". The fix ..(after trying most of the other standard outgoing mail fixes).....turned out to be ....deleting the TCP/IP stack and reloading it. Thought I'd share this tidbit, since we may be seeing it alot now that IE is our default.....(Thanks Scott Allen Huddy)

You should check Control Panel, Network, Identification, Computer Name. Internet Mail sends this to the SMTP server during logon (on the HELO or EHLO command). The use of special characters in this field can cause problems. Also, using a name of any of your ISP's servers here can cause problems. This field is supposed to be the name of your PC. An alternate source of this logon information is Control Panel, Network, TCP/IP, Properties, DNS Configuration, Host & Domain. Normally, for a Dial-up Connection, the DNS should be disabled here and any needed settings placed in the DUN connectoid (My Computer, Dial-up Networking, right-click on the connectoid, Properties, Server Type, TCP/IP Settings). Control Panel, Network settings are intended for LAN connections, but will override DUN settings. Thanks to Michael Santovec.

When installing Internet Explorer on win 95 and you get the error, "Setup has been canceled. Microsoft Internet Explorer was not set up successfully."
This error can occur if the drive on which you are installing Internet Explorer does not have enough free space. The Internet Explorer files use approximately 10-15 MB of disk space after installation, but the Setup program can require considerably more space.
Increase the amount of free space on the disk on which you are installing Internet Explorer. For a Full or Typical installation, you need at least 63 MB of free disk space. For a Minimal installation, at least 25 MB of free space is required. To increase the amount of free space on the hard disk, try the following methods:
Close all running programs. Doing so may cause the swap file to shrink enough to let you install Internet Explorer 3.0. Remove all shortcuts in the Startup folder, disable the "load=" and "run=" lines in the Win.ini file, and then restart Windows 95. Doing so may cause the swap file to shrink enough to let you install Internet Explorer 3.0. Remove any unnecessary files from the hard disk. An unknown TCP/IP error has ocurred.Some of the messages in your Outbox could not be sent.
This is a possible error msg when member tries to send e-mail from Internet Mail in Win95 for the first time. Solution: open control panel> Network> TCP/IP> click on properties> Wins Configuration> disable wins resolution or use DHCP for wins resolution> do the opposite of what is already in there> click ok twice> click yes to restart and try sending mail again.Thanks to Anibal Villacis

Problem: member can receive mail and news but cannot send mail out using internet mail, receives error "an unknown TCP/IP, invalid domain name". The user can still send using Exchange but not Internet Mail.
The Fix: Go into the network setting in the control Panel and remove the IPX/SPX protocol (thanks to Paul Lawrence). The other Fix that has worked for a couple of techs is to go to the identity tab and specify "GTE.NET" (thanks Phili), this one may not work all the time and may not be the most reliable but they both work.

The News server(s) now require a user's name and password in order to access them.
In Internet Explorer, the customer will need to go to News/Options/Server, highlight news.gte.net, click on Properties, put a check mark in the box next to "This server requires me to logon", and put their user name and password in the boxes under "Logon using", making sure that there is a "Dot" there.

If someone puts a password in for "Enable Ratings", then forgets it, at present, (5/6/97) the only fix for it is this.
What Chad and I had to do to remove the ratings:
Uninstall the software Restart Do a find for a file called rsaci.rat and rename it Do a find for a file called Msrating.dll and rename it Go into regedit and search for "rsaci" and remove the keys (there will be two of them) Once in regedit do another search for anything that says "iexplore" and remove it Restart Reinstall the software

Here is a workaround to fix the content advisor.....
The first time the content advisor ratings are activated, a file is created in your windows/system directory called "ratings.pol" This is the file that you need. This is a hidden file so you must be sure that your windows explorer will view all files. (open windows explorer, click on options then view, be sure view all files is selected). Rename this file to "ratings.old".
Next, you need to have someone running the same version of IE do the following for you;
Have them to disable the content adivisor ratings if they are currently enabled on their system. If it is not enabled already they will need to enable the ratings (writing down the password they use) and then disable the ratings. (the reason they must enable is to create the file "ratings.pol").
Have that person send you the file along with the password just in case you want to enable the ratings sometime. Copy the file to your windows/system directory. Connect to your server, open IE and you should be back in business.

We have seen several calls on the following error message in our Internet Explorer software. "Err: Content Advisor configuration is missing." Uninstalling and Reinstalling the software DOES NOT fix this problem.
This error is caused by the Ratings.pol file. It is either damaged or missing. To resolve the problem look for the file in the windows/system folder. If it exists rename it to Ratings.old.
Then start Internet Explorer, and then click Options on the View menu. Click the Security tab, and then click Settings in the Content Advisor area. Type the Supervisor password, and then click OK. Select the Ratings options the customer prefers, and then click OK. Thanks to Mark Myers.

When you attempt to retrieve new mail by clicking Send and Receive, you may get the message:
Explorer has caused an Invalid Page Fault in module Mailnews.dll
This can happen when you have a damaged message in your mail server Inbox. To solve this problem, add the Internet Mail service to an Exchange profile, then configure it to connect to your mail server. When you set up Exchange, go to Properties, click the Connection tab, then select the Work off-line and use Remote Mail check box. Now open Exchange and choose Tools|Remote Mail. On the Remote Mail toolbar, choose Connect. Remote Mail will dial your Internet service provider and retrieve the headers of all messages. It will simply retrieve the headers -- it will not download the messages. If you find a System Administrator - Undeliverable message, mark it for retrieval and click Connect again. Now open Internet Mail and retrieve the remaining messages from the server. Thanks to Brenda Spence.
Corrupt Cache or History folder
If you find you can't delete the 'temporary internet files' or 'history files', try this.
Here is the right way to delete the cache and reset it. (You might as well do the history too, but if you don't want to, just leave off the deltree of the history part.
Boot to DOS by going to the Start button and then select Shut Down as below.
Select as it's done below.
Then type as it is below to delete all the files.
Now type 'exit' to restart W95 and run IE 3.0x. What we did removes, then rebuilds the history and cache folders completely.
Then, you will need to re-register these folders so they will function correctly.
With IE 3.0x NOT running, go to the Start button and select Run
Now, do as below.
And if we're successful, this appears.

Invalid Page Fault Error in Wininet.dll After Installing IE
The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS
When you try to install Internet Explorer, you may receive the following error message, even though you have plenty of free disk space available for the installation:
Not enough free space.
CAUSE
This error can occur when the installation file is damaged.
RESOLUTION
Download and install a new copy of Internet Explorer.
"this file has been damaged, it will now be repaired"....
This also affects sending mail. And trying to delete anything from the outbox does no good. Fix is below.To repair your damaged folder:
- Open IM
- Go to File | Folder| Compact | All Folders
- Exit IM
See if this solves the problem. If not, try this:
- Exit IM
- Search for the *.mbx and *.idx files of the damaged folder
- Delete the files. Be aware that this will delete the messages stored in this folder.
- Open IM. It should now recreate the folder for you and you should have no further
problems.
Internet Explorer Settings Are Not Saved or Are Unavailable
SYMPTOMS
Changes to any of the Internet Explorer settings in the Options dialog box may not be retained, or some or all of the settings may be unavailable.
CAUSE
Automatic Configuration is enabled in Internet Explorer.
RESOLUTION
To disable Automatic Configuration, use the following steps:
1.In Internet Explorer, click Options on the View menu.
2.Click the Advanced tab.
3.Click Automatic Configuration.
4.Clear the URL box.

IExplorer caused a general protection fault in module TGIUL95.DRV
Errors in your video driver usually indicate a video driver problem.
Try setting the video driver to a different screen size and/or number of colors (Control Panel, Display, Settings).
Another thing to try is Control Panel, System, Performance, Graphics, and reduce the Hardware Acceleration.
If one of those "fixes" the problem, you should get an updated video driver from your video card manufacturer. They probably have a web site. Even if the above don't help, you should still check for updated drivers.
Another possible cause of problems is a corrupted browser cache. Try clearing it. MSIE: View, Options, Advanced, Temporary Internet Files, Settings, Empty Folder. Thanks to Michael Santovev.
Make IE3.02 Dial Up Automatically
When you have the AutoDial or "Connect to the Internet as needed" feature
enabled and you start Microsoft Internet Explorer, Internet Explorer may not automatically
dial your Internet service provider. Because you are not connected to your service
provider, the following error message may be displayed:
Unable to find <site>. The address may be incorrect.
CAUSE
This problem can occur when you switch from using a proxy server or other LAN-based
connection to the Internet to using the AutoDial feature to connect to an Internet service
provider. After you configure Internet Explorer to use the AutoDial or "Connect to
the Internet as needed" feature, your current start page may still be the start page
that you were using with a LAN-based connection. If Internet Explorer does not need to
connect to your service provider to access this start page, it does not automatically dial
the service provider. The service provider is automatically dialed only when you attempt
to access a site that Internet Explorer cannot access without dialing the provider.
The error message listed above may be displayed when your start page is one that is
normally accessed using a LAN-based connection, but is currently not available.
NOTE: It is possible for the problem described in this article to occur even if you
have never configured Internet Explorer to connect to the Internet using a proxy server or
other LAN-based connection. This problem can also occur when your current start page is a
site that Internet Explorer cannot access without dialing your service provider. The
resolution described in this article resolves this problem in these cases.
RESOLUTION
To cause Internet Explorer to automatically dial your service
provider, follow these steps:
1.Click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Dial-Up
Networking.
2.Double-click the connectoid you use to dial the Internet, and then log on as you
normally do. If you do not know which connectoid to use, then use the right mouse button
to click the Internet icon on the desktop, click Properties on the menu that appears, and
then see which connectoid is listed in the Dial-Up Networking box.
3.After you start the Dial-Up Networking connectoid, start Internet Explorer.
4.Type the Internet address of the site you want to use as your start page in the Address
box, and then press ENTER. Perform this step even if the site you want to use is already
listed in the Address box.
5.If the address you want to use did not appear in the Address box when you started
Internet Explorer, click Options on the View menu, click the Start And Search Pages tab,
and then click Use Current.
6.Quit Internet Explorer and the Dial-Up Networking connection, and then restart Internet

My Inbox is empty, But the Inbox.mbx and idx files are huge. What is wrong?
You have to periodically do a Mail, Read Mail, File, Folder, Compact, All to recover the disk space from deleted messages. There is no option to do this automatically.
Favorites won't save when you you try to add a site.
1) Restart in DOS
2) At the c:windows prompt, type: attrib -s favori~1
3) press "enter"
4) exit DOS
5) Restart IE.
A number of people have reported problems with disappearing messages.
This is specific to versions 1160+ of Internet Mail. The earlier 1155 version does not appear to have this problem.
Downloading the latest version of IM&N should solve the problem.

Error Message: Invalid Page Fault in Mshtml.dll
SYMPTOMS
When you are browsing with Internet Explorer, you may receive random "Iexplore caused an invalid page fault in module Mshtml.dll..." error messages. These error messages may be intermittent and are generally associated with using High Color (16-bit) or True Color (24-bit) color depths.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur when you are using an older third-party display driver.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, use the appropriate method(s):
Method 1
Contact the manufacturer of your display adapter about obtaining a possible driver update that works correctly with Windows 95.
Method 2
Reduce the Color Palette setting in Display properties to 256, using the following steps:
1.In Control Panel, double-click Display.
2.Click the Settings tab.
3.In
the Color Palette box, click 256 Color.
4.Click OK.
5.Restart your computer when you are prompted to do so.

How To Extract Cab Files From Windows 95 CD

1. If you need a fresh copy of a Win95 file, you'll find it in one
of the CAB files. But which one? To find out, open Explorer
and select the Win95 folder on the CD-ROM. Now open the Tools menu,
select Find\Files or Folders and type *.CAB in the Named box on the Name
&Â Â Â Location tab.
Now click on the Advanced tab, type the name of the file you want in
the Containing Text box and click on the Find Now button.
Well that is fine but what if you don't know the exact file name and
want a copy of it?
a. Insert or re-insert your setup CD.
b. A screen appears and you want to select BROWSE THIS CD.
c. A Window (like MY COMPUTER appears) and you double-click on
the Win95 folder.
d. Another like Window appears with some files and folders. To
see the files in a CAB file just double-click the CAB folder
and you will see the files
contained therein. Keep hunting
one CAB folder after another
until you find the file you're
seeking.
e. Highlight the file and under FILE select EXTRACT. A scroll
screen appears where you
select where you want the file
extracted to.
Highlight the desired folder and hit Ok & you have your file
2. Another Extraction method:
This method works from the C or DOS prompt so this is also
the
method you use if you can't get to Windows and were working
on
solving a problem.
a. The first step is to change to the Windows\Command folder where
Extract.exe is located. (if you have set up a smart boot or
recovery disk with Extract.exe on it this step is not
necessary)
Example C:CD Windows\Command + ENTER
b. You don't have to use a batch file to extract a file from the
Win95_XX.cab files. Just use the /A switch.
For example: To extract file1.dll from an
unknown .cab file
enter;
extract /A x:\win95\win95_02.cab
file1.dll
|_ your CDRom drive letter
at the run command line.
NOTE: There are 19 CAB files, Precopy1.cab, Precopy2.cab and
Win95_02.cab to Win95_17.cab - use Win95_02.cab as shown
to begin this wildcard extract proceedure.
Extract will start with the named CAB file and continue
through
all CAB files in the folder. In other words you don't need
to
know which CAB file your file is in, Windows will find it.
To extract a file to a specific folder you
can add /L destination where /L is the complete path to the
desired folder.
For example: To extract calc.exe to C:\temp1 enter;
extract /A x:\win95\win95_02.cab calc.exe /L c:\temp1
If you know which CAB file the desired file is in;
For example: To extract the file CALC.EXE (which is in the
02.CAB file/folder) to C drive folder TEMP1 you
would enter;
extract /a x:\win95\win95_02.cab calc.exe
/l c:\temp1
NOTE: This is faster than the wildcard extraction process.
Now what do you do if you don't know the exact file name?
You need
to be able to list the files in each CAB until you locate
the file
and to do that;
Viewing the files in a given CAB file:
a. To view the files in a given CAB file enter;
extract x:\win95\win95_0Y.cab |more
| |_
the CAB file number
|_ your CDRom drive letter
Keep working your way through the CABs until you find the file
you want.
** The |more entry is called a switch and it tells the
computer
to display the files one screen at a time. Not using |more
will cause the files to zip past allowing
only the the last
few to be looked at stationary on the
screen.
** There is more that you can do from the prompt,
such as
extracting the file and putting it
in the folder where it
actually belongs overwriting the
existing file but it gets
messy (lots of switches, spaces
Etc. which provide too much
room for a typo Boo-Boo). So I'm
going to stop here where
you've seen how to search for a
file and extract it to a
temporary
folder.

The problem lies in the .PWL file. The file that controls the user password list is corrupted and has to be replaced. Have the member go to WINDOWS and delete his username.PWL file and restart. Once he restarts windows, it will go through the Windows logon procedure again. Once he dials in, the problem will be gone. Thanks to Chris Gomez

During Windows 95 Setup, answer Yes when you are prompted "Do you want to keep this file?" for the Comctl32.dll file to keep the Internet Explorer 3.0 version.
Q. Why are messages that are "no longer available on the server" shown in the "summary" of subjects in the newsgroup viewer?
Your local news file may be out-of-synch with the server.
Try the following: News, Options, Advanced, Clean up files Now highlight the problem newsgroup and click the Delete button. Then go back to the main News window and select that newsgroup. It should download all the current message headers.
If you still have problems with more than an occasional message "not on server", there may be a problem with the ISP. Contact them.

Internet news 1.0 says 30 messages..when I download I get 0
There is a bug in the Microsoft News Reader where it thinks all the messages in a newsgroup are read. This hits some people for some newsgroups. Once it happens to a newsgroup, it won't fix itself.
The fix involves closing News, locating the News directory, delete the *.NCH file for each affected newsgroup and the *.SUB file for the affected news server. Then open News again and subscribe to each of the affected newsgroups again.

Resolution:
Add "http://" to the beginning of the start page address. To do so, follow
these steps:
In Internet Explorer, click Options on the View menu.
Click the Navigation tab.
In the Address box, type "http://" (without quotation marks) before the name of
the start page.
For example:
http://www.chasms.com
Delete all *.pwl files.
Reboot computer.
On reboot, have the customer put a user name in, but leave the password space blank.
Click on OK.
Computer should now save password.
