Reinstall your System

Over time, your system can get "corrupted," and this often causes strange behavior. (Errors of Type 1 and increased drive access are two examples.) The solution is (or should be) quite simple.

How to reinstall your system:

  1. Locate the disks or CD that came with your Macintosh.
  2. Restart your computer with the Shift key held down to temporarily disable all
    extensions.
  3. Insert the System CD or the disk labeled "Installer."
  4. Run the installer program, and do a normal install.
  5. If all goes well, restart your computer.
  6. Voila! Your problems should be solved.
A tip: if you have enough space on your hard drive, and a compression program like Stuffit,
Drop Stuff, etc. its a good idea to make a compressed archive of the finder and system
suitcase. Store the archives on your hard drive (they _must_ be compressed to avoid problems),
and next time your computer acts weird, you can decompress a fresh system! This way, you
avoid having to go through the whole installation process again.
