Can't remember the name of a web site you want to visit? Use the Autosearch feature in Internet Explorer 3.0. Type 'go' in the address bar followed by some keywords that describe what you're looking for (e.g. "go united airlines"), press ENTER, and IE will start a high-level search for web content to match your description. Autosearch in IE 3.0 is provided by Yahoo!™, one of the most popular Web search engines on the Internet today.
Back To Menu
Start Autosearch in the Address Bar using the 'go' keyword, or alternate keywords (such as "find", "?", or "search"). If your search string has a space in it, you don't even need to type the keyword (e.g. just typing "bruce springsteen" in the address bar will start an Autosearch automatically).

I just ran into a member was getting the error message "The environment
variable ieppp is not set to point to the directory to which the Internet
Explorer is installed". The command "Set ieppp=c:/iexplore" was in his autoexec.bat and matched the directory specified but there where so many
set commands that he ran out of environment space.
If the member is knowledgeable and you feel comfortable doing this, put in the command
SHELL=C:/COMMAND.COM /P /E:1024 in the config.sys
and do a step by step boot to make sure there are no errors and verify that all of the "SET" commands worked. If you feel uncomfortable doing this, then advise the member that he/she needs to refer their DOS book about increasing their environment space.    (Thanks to Douglas Dupont)

In order to uninstall IE3.01 from Win3.X we will need to delete the IE directory from File Manager first. Since IE3.01 does not have an uninstaller built in we will also need to remove some lines from the Autoexec.bat and the System.ini. files.
SYSTEM.INI:
[386Enh]
device=c:/iexplore/iedial.386
device=c:/iexplore/vxdpctcp.386
device=c:/iexplore/iewcomm.386
AUTOEXEC.BAT:
SET PATH=%PATH%;C:/IEXPLORE
set ieppp=C:/IEXPLORE
set pctcp=C:/IEXPLORE/pctcp.shv
These are also lines we need to look for when troubleshooting IE3. I hope this helps in the training process of the entire helpdesk to better serve our customers. (Thanks to Anibal Villacis)

We cannot connect to your customized calling number"
Member was getting the above message with us and when she dialed AOL. All settings seemed fine except the number she was dialing. She had "Disabled call waiting" but had edited it herself having it read 70, 574 3777, leaving out the* or #. Thanks to Robert Asplet for pointing this out to me.

Application Error: Call to Undefined Dynalink Member got this after installing IE3.01 in Win3.x. Immediately after rebooting she needed to go to Microsoft Word and and she got this error. In Excel, same error. I uninstalled her IE3.01 from her system but still got the same error. I was going to reinstall her Microsoft Word, she had her disks, but Melissa advised against it so I referred her to Microsoft. Later, I found this from "billy" asynx@gte.net.
This error is usually caused by an old .DLL file located in
the WINDOWS directory. The most common one is TOOLHELP.DLL.
Locate this file and rename it. Then, restart Windows. The
correct version of this file is located in the WINDOWS/SYSTEM
directory and has a date of 3/10/92 and a size of 14128.
This problem can also occur with an earlier version of
SHELL.DLL, OLECLI.DLL, OLESVR.DLL, and COMMDLG.DLL. All of
these file should be located in the WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory
and have a date of 3/10/92.

How to edit "config.sys", "system.ini" and "autoexec.bat" in Win3.x and Win95.
In Win3.x, go to "Program Mgr.", go to "file" down to "Run", type "sysedit", hit "enter" and the system files will come up. You'll have to sort through them to find the "config.sys", "system.ini", and "autoexec.bat" and then do the editing. In Win 95, go to "Start", "run", type "sysedit" and do the same thing. Be sure to save after you edit.
SEE EXAMPLE.
Thanks to Ron Day for telling me we needed this.

After you install Internet Explorer 3.0 for Windows 3.1 with the dialer, you may receive the following error message when you try to connect to your Internet service provider (ISP):
No dial-in driver loaded
CAUSE
This problem can occur if one of the following conditions is true:
Changes have been made to your system files but you have not yet restarted
your computer. *You copied the installation files manually instead of
installing the program normally.
RESOLUTION
If you have not yet rebooted your computer, do so now. If you copied files

Problem:
Member enters the incorrect password when opening Internet mail for Win3.x for the first time and is not able to remember the password.
Solution:
In order to clear the password, member will need to delete this line from the mail.ini file in the iexplore/mail directory;
username=C:/IEXPLORE/Mail/User#
Also the User# folder located in the Mail directory will need to be removed, but be aware that if the member has any messages in his/her user folder that they may want to keep, they will need to manually transfer them to the new folder before the old one is deleted. Thanks to Paul Lawrence.

To set up Internet Mail for multiple users
You can set up Internet Mail so that you can log on to different mail accounts, such as when you have multiple accounts, or when several people share the same computer and have separate mail accounts.
To set up several accounts for yourself
1. On the Mail menu, make sure Skip Logon is not selected, and then quit Internet Mail.
2. Log on to Internet Mail with the user name and password, and then follow the instructions on your screen to set up the mail account.
3. If you want to set up additional accounts, quit Internet Mail, and then repeat steps 1 and 2.
To set up your own account when others share this computer
1. On the Mail menu, make sure Skip Logon is not selected, and then quit Internet Mail.
2. Log on to Internet Mail with the user name and password, and then follow the instructions on your screen to set up the mail account.
Notes:
The Skip Logon command is unavailable if there is more than one Internet Mail account set up on this computer.
Once you've set up Internet Mail for multiple users, to log on as a different user, just quit Internet Mail, and then log on again with a different user name and password. You do not need to shut down your computer to log on as a different Internet Mail user.
To skip the Internet Mail logon
On the Mail menu, click Skip Logon.
The next time you log on to Internet Mail, Internet Mail will start without prompting you for a logon name or password.
Caution
If there are other users on this computer, selecting Skip Logon will enable them to open your mail account without logging on. This command is unavailable if there is more than one Internet Mail account set up on this computer. Thanks to Anibal Villacis
